What to Expect at Your First Therapy Session

Starting therapy for the first time, or with a new therapist, can feel like a big step. Many of my clients tell me they felt nervous before our first session, wondering what they should say or whether they were "doing it right." If that sounds like you, know that there is no wrong way to begin.

Our first meeting is really about getting to know each other. I will ask about what brought you to therapy, what has been going on in your life, and what you are hoping will feel different. You are always welcome to share at your own pace. My role in that first session is to listen closely, ask thoughtful questions, and help you feel comfortable in the space we are building together.

In my practice, I work with individuals, couples, and families, drawing mainly on Emotionally Focused Therapy, Internal Family Systems, and a psychodynamic lens. Rather than fitting you into a single model, I adapt my approach to what will genuinely support you, whether you are working through a relationship concern, anxiety, a difficult family dynamic, or simply want to better understand yourself. Sessions are available in English, Italian, and Farsi, and I welcome LGBTQ individuals and couples.

A few practical notes: I offer a free initial phone consultation so we can see if we're a good fit before booking a full session, and appointments are available both in person in Toronto and virtually. If you have insurance, many extended health plans offer reimbursement for registered psychotherapy, though this depends on your specific plan, and direct billing is not currently available.

If you have been thinking about reaching out but haven't taken that first step yet, I invite you to book a free consultation. Therapy works best when it feels like the right fit, and that first conversation is a low-pressure way to find out.
